Illinois Safe Children Act Protects Minors
The End Demand Illinois campaign is proud to announce that its first legislative initiative, The Illinois Safe Children’s Act (HB 6462), passed the General Assembly yesterday with a vote of 113 – 0! The Illinois Safe Child Act will end the practice of prosecuting minors who have been prostituted, and instead ensure that exploited children receive a safe home and services. The bill would also give police and prosecutors new tools to go after pimps, traffickers, and people who buy sex--an important first step in ending the demand for the commercial sex trade.
In partnership with the End Demand Illinois campaign, the bill was championed by Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, whose leadership should serve as a national example for prosecutors around the country considering best practices for responding to the commercial sexual exploitation of our children.
End Demand Illinois’s lobbying team was an integral part of this victory, and CAASE sends special thanks to Daria Mueller, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless; Courtney Eccles, Protestants for the Common Good; Karen Stauss, Polaris Project; Lyn Schollett and Polly Poskin, Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault; and Rose Mary Meyer, PROJECT Irene.
